FACT CHECK: Democrats’ Criticism of America’s War Effort Continues The latest Democrat to break rank and publicly criticize America’s war effort is none other than Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD). Daschle’s comment directly contradicts his own previous statements of support for President Bush in the war against terrorism and aligns him with other criticizing Democrats such as Sen. Biden and Rep. Rangel. Yesterday,
when asked if "the president was right to label Iran, Iraq and North
Korea as being an axis of evil," Sen. Daschle made the following
comment: "I don’t think so. ... I think we’ve got to be very careful with rhetoric of that kind." Tom Daschle on PBS’s "NewsHour with Jim Lehrer," Feb. 11, 2002 "Senate
Majority leader Tom Daschle said President Bush was wrong to label Iran, Iraq
and North Korea as an ‘axis of evil,’ giving a hint of Democratic
dissent in the war on terrorism." Associated Press, "Daschle says Bush
was wrong to use ‘axis of evil’ phrase," Feb. 12, 2002 FACT
CHECK: "As
we look globally, as we look worldwide about where else we need to be concerned,
those are the three countries [Iran, Iraq and North Korea] that come to mind.
Those are the three countries that have to be targeted." Sen. Daschle on
CNN’s "American Morning With Paula Zahn," Jan. 30, 2002 "I
think that there’s a very strong belief that we’ve got to do whatever is
necessary to prevent the kind of attacks that we saw last fall. And if it takes
preemptive strikes, it takes preemptive action, I think the Congress is prepared
to support it." Sen. Daschle on ABC’s "Good Morning America,"
Jan. 30, 2002 "Senate
Majority Leader Tom Daschle said Wednesday that Democrats are inclined to
endorse whatever military action Bush might deem necessary against Iraq, Iran or
North Korea." The Associated Press, "Bush Touts Proposals On 2-Day
Swing" by David Espo, Jan. 30, 2002 Paid
for by the Republican National Committee.
